Lunch with friends - Sunday, March 1, 2009

After church today, Hanna and I went to lunch with Wolfgang and Diane Grube, who are friends from church.   DeeDee has had a bad cough for about 5 weeks now and missed church again today and was not able to go to lunch with us.  Wolfgang came to the US from Hamburg, Germany in the late 50's.   Diane is from Australia and met Wolfgang on a cruise both happened to be on, oh so many years ago.   Since they have lived in the Scappoose area for over 30 years, they were excited to show us some of the back roads that they have walked and biked over, and a favorite restaurant of theirs.    The restaurant is the Rock Creek Tavern, which is one of the McMenamins chain of restuarants, each of which is different.   Rock Creek Tavern has been in the same location, in one form or another, for 80 years.  Hanna and I enjoyed the company and food, and of course, whenever we see Wolfgang, Hanna and Wolfgang babel away in German - even if Hanna speaks Southern German and Wolfgang speaks Northern German - it all sounds the same to me, but both assure me it is different.  Unfortunately, Wolfgang is not in the photo, as he was behind the camera.   I am amazed at Hanna's language skills, as not only did she talk to us in very good English and to Wolfgang in German, but she was also able to talk Australian to Diane without any problems at all.
