Vacation #10: 5/18/10: Cruise - Ruins at Herculaneum

HERCULANEUM: The ancient city of Herculaneum, while smaller and not as well known as Pompeii, was nonetheless also destroyed almost instantaneously by volcanic pyroclastic flows when Mt. Vesuvius eruped in August 79 AD. We boarded a bus with others from Voyager for a short drive to Herculaneum. On the way, we had great views of Mt. Vesuvius. We spent several hours walking in and around the ruins. It is amazing how well some of the wood beams were preserved, as well as the tile floors and frescos on the interior walls. Herculaneum is an ongoing project and we saw several teams of people studying the ruins and working on discovering, uncovering, and preserving still more of the city.
