Vacation #21: 5/24/10: Germany - Heilbronn and Kilianskirche

Last night on the way home from the airport, Dieter told us that he and Sabine didn't have to go to work on the upcoming week. That was wonderful news, because it meant we wouldn't have to rent a car and try to get around on our own with Hanna reading maps and me trying to navigate the narrow village streets and byways. So, on this, our first day back from our cruise, Dieter, Sabine, Hanna, DeeDee and I were on the road early, headed to Heilbronn, where Sabine's mom and dad live, and where Sabine grew up. We were on the Autobahn for a little while, then off onto wonderful country roads, through picturesque villages and great photo ops. Arriving in Heilbronn, we saw some beautiful buildings, including the Ratskeller (a restaurant), stopped at the Kilianskirsche - an 11th Century Gothic style church named for St. Kilian, and visited an exhibit showing Heilbronn before and after blitz bombing by the Allies in WWII. And, of course, whenever DeeDee saw something she thought could be incorporated into a design in a quilt, I was instructed to take a photo - from designs on a building to the way that pavers made patterns in the street.

Then we went to meet Sabine's parents, Eberhard and Gerte Eisele, who had invited us to their home, where we had a wonderful lunch that Eberhard made all of us. Before and after lunch, we checked out their garden and visited, relaxing in the warm, wonderful back yard.
